As we embark on our journey towards fulfilment, we inevitably get pulled back by the triggers and traps that have been with us for a long time. Some of these are familiar: You know them, but you can’t seem to overcome them. Some you may be blind to or better at ignoring.
In my experience with high performers, these are the three barriers that I most commonly see getting in the way of optimal wellbeing, health and performance. I explain each as well as Pathways to Growth so that they stop getting in your way!
Emotional Blocks: Navigating the Depths
We all want to steer clear of challenging emotions like anger, hurt, fear, grief, and shame. But when we avoid them, we may inadvertently block our Path to Fulfilment. Resilience improves with emotional tolerance and a capacity to experience and move through painful emotions towards freedom from them. Fulfilment requires overcoming the fear surrounding painful emotions and learning that our feelings can be our superpower!
Pathways to Growth: Practice mindfulness techniques to sit with and understand your emotions. Seek therapy or counseling to develop emotional resilience. Embrace vulnerability so that it can be a
strength rather than a weakness.
Relationship Blocks: Building Bridges, Not Walls
Relational blocks can impact our key relationships.
- Relationship with Others: Many high achievers have trouble asking for help and often feel let down by others when they need assistance. In times of stress, it can feel easier to do everything ourselves, but in the end, it can leave us feeling unsupported or alone.
- Relationship with Oneself: Many high achievers spend far too much time pleasing others and seeking external praise, forgetting to make time and space to re-evaluate their own priorities, values, and changing needs. As we grow and take on new personal and professional roles, we can lose our connection with ourselves in favour of our need for the approval of others.
Pathways to Growth: Regularly self check ins to ensure actions and decisions align with your values and priorities. Use spirit nourishing practices to Cultivate self-compassion and find your way towards self appraisal through knowing and living out our own destiny
Internalized Pressure Blocks: Finding Balance Within
For many high achievers, the external pressure pales in comparison to the internal. Understanding and managing internalized pressure is key to finding fulfilment.
Pathways to Growth: Practice self-reflection and introspection. Develop self-awareness around your inner dialogue and beliefs. Cultivate gratitude and learn to appreciate your achievements without constantly striving for more.
